Description :
Woot! So heres my first game I made using the scav3ng3r ending. Pretty good for a first try in my opinion. I know I could do better but I honestly just made this to test the engine. Confused about the ending? Well look forward to a Day Two - Basement Ghost. Which I'll start working on soon. I didn't include sound because I couldn't be assed to convert everything I needed then bug my friend to upload them to his site. Just think of it as a text adventure. Oh and if you want my XML file to see how something worked just ask. I'd be happy to share it. Also if you are wondering where I got my pictures from I took them myself using the camera on my cellphone. If you really want some good scenes for your game try hitting up a local abandoned warehouse or building. Then just think out how the story would go and get the pictures you will need. You can get some interesting shots this way that you wouldnt be able to find simply on the net.
You didn't believe it when you first heard about it. "A program on your cellphone that lets you see the place where ghosts live." Just a stupid internet rumor, no way it could be true. The first place you remember hearing about it was on /x/, so that pretty much discredits it entirely. You brush the rumor off, even as it pops up on a few obscure paranormal message boards. "It's just a hoax or a bunch of people playing pretend" Then it happens, only about five days ago you bump into someone at your local convience store. You didn't notice as you were walking down the halls staring at what kind of toilet paper you should get, and you slammed right into him. A pretty unkept fellow, messy hair, unshaved face, black hoodie and old jeans. An obvious basement dweller like yourself, now on the ground below your feet. You bend down to help him up when you notice the word 'scav3ng3r' written in some gothic-style font on his black hoody, next to him is a shiny new cellphone, it's a flip phone and the covers open. On the screen is nothing but a purple cloud. You sit their staring at the whole situation "scav3ng3r" a phone that shows a different world. Then when your new friend on the ground notices your stare. The two of you quickly become friends as he introduces you to the world of shadow side and the game of being a scav3ng3r. It's not long before he shows you how to convert your phone into a ritual cellphone, and before you know it. He asks you to meet him at an old house, just outside of town. He wants to prove to you that these things work.

Pretty good start!!
You're getting the hang of it, kudos for adding the shadowside layer! If you need any help with anything, just say the word!
I plan to live forever. So far, so good!
For some weird reason my game
For some weird reason my game is messed up, the thing lags then I get one of those error messages about a script in flash causing the program to run slowly. Then I hit OK and that shit goes into seizure mode and I have to quit.
Think I may have fucked up something trying to get an action to work as I didn't really understand how to do those.
Edit:Weird my revisions have the same thing happening to them but other games work fine.
Edit2:I removed an action I did from XML, works fine now.
My problem is I'm simply trying to make an item that when clicked, displays text in the log to the left.
You were very close
Here, check out this image, basically all you had to do was name the item the same as you had in your action, and add a little caption so the player has an idea of what's going to happen when he clicks. Here:

The thing about freezing up concerns me though... I've been trying to find that error and I can never reproduce it, let me know if it happens again, it totally shouldnt, and if it does I need to find the bug and kill it!
Its my pleasure to help, chat me up as you go along, I'll get you through to a finished game :)

I took a quick peek
... to see how you were doing, and yeah, I see you fixed the first action! Alright! Then I noticed you have two items more or less in the same spot, the original black gunk, and then ghost_3blackgunk3 right on top.
You don't have to have different items if you don't want to, both actions can use the same black gunk item if you want.
And yup, naming it "ghost_" makes it so that it only appears in the shadowside, but since there's no file attached, there was nothing to appear anyway :)
I won't peek anymore unless you tell me to; feels like an invasion of privacy, lol :) but carry on and let me know if you get stuck anywhere.
Good luck!

Yeah it takes a bit of
Yeah it takes a bit of messing around to get used to but you defintely got a pretty good and easy to use engine here Fable.
If you start getting the word of this thing out I bet you'll have alot of people making a ton of different games.
This thing is fun to play with, I'll try and turn this into a full game. I just gotta get some more pictures for it though.
Thanks for helping me out by the way. It's easier to understand a new game engine if you have someone around to tell you what to do.
The only other thing I don't seem to get is how to make the journal appear like you did in The Warehouse Ghost.
That's what I'm here for :)
Oh, the journal is a GUI item, GUI means it remains in place on the screen and doesn't move with the location picture when you pan around with the mouse. To make gui items, all you have to do is make the name start with "gui_", as in "gui_journal", give it a try :)
I really hope the word spreads and many people come to make games, we'll see! :)

I like this so far. Good
I like this so far. Good stuff man.
Might want to proofread your writing though. There's a problem with the basement scene -- when you go back from inspecting the fridge, the whole phone checking text starts again.
Yeah the writing is pretty
Yeah the writing is pretty terrible in general I haven't really put much thought into it.
And I'll check out the fridge thing now.
Almos their.
Well I would consider the whole gameplay thing done at this point.
Right now I'm trying to figure out these three things-
1)Need a place to upload music files to
2)How to add sound effects
3)Get the refridgerator bug fixed.
Holy shit this was good!
You fucking blew me away! I cheated, peeking at the editor, but goddamn man, you have a complete story here! I LOVED the ghost markings on the fridge, spooky as hell. And then the suffocating bit in the end, you even used a timer! hahaha, talk about a quick learner, holy shit!
Man, this is very good, lol, this is probably just what I needed to get back into the mood to finish my own Gibson House thing. And you made it lore too, you have the culture of the scavenger, the cellphone, everything.... hahahah, you fucking made my day. Wow. Dont know what to say :)
As for a place to upload sound files, if you dont find any, let me know and I'll make an FTP account for you to servers I own.
To add sound effects you just load them like regular items, and you can use "Size" to control their volume. To make them play, you just call them at the Output of any action, like "You suddenly hear a bell [[bell]]" (actually, they can go in the intro of any action too, or even in the intro text of the whole scene). Background music is just an URL to some MP3 in the interwebz and you load that in the scene options.
Also, what refrigerator bug? Did you fix it, whatever it was? It worked well for me all along :) Or maybe Boxsmith meant that the intro text for the basement scene plays twice, once when you first arrive, and twice when you come back from the ref? If this is the problem, the way to fix it is this: put that intro text as the intro of an action. Intros only play once, unlike output text, so even if the player exits and re-enters the basement many times, they will only get the text the first time.
Man, I'm totally buzzed that you made it this far, lol :)
I plan to live forever. So far, so good!
Thanks for all the praise
Thanks for all the praise Fable. Feels good man. I just sort of started messing with things and eventually I came out with what you're looking at now.
Incase you were wondering all the pictures came from my friends basement. I was over there today and sort of planned out the simple plot to the game, took some pictures with my cellphone, sent them to my e-mail, then threw them into the game. I think one of the best features is to use any old image as the background for the scene. Maybe I'll hit up an old abandoned house or something one of these days for my next game.
Yeah a guy I know over IRC to host my files for me but linking to them doesn't work so good. Maybe because they're oggs or something.
As for the refridgerator I don't quite get why this happens.
When you open the fridge the wall of text from the beginning plays instead of the text I included in the scene. I was messing around with it and can't figure out why it happens.
OGGS
Yup, that's definitely why, just convert them to MP3s and they should play fine. A software that I use all the time for sound editing is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ free as beer, too).
And yeah, I figured the images had to be Original Content when I saw you had two version of the fridge, one open one closed. Mixing this with Urban Ex (that bit about you hitting up some abandoned house with a camera) would be pretty cool! I use videogames mostly because I'm lazy :)
About the fridge bug, I'll look into it, chances are there is something wrong with the engine and not your fault, we're still in a "finding bugs" stage. (this reminds me, I found another bug that resets your percentage completion when you switch scenes, that shouldn't happen) so yeah, I'll try to fix both things tonight.
I plan to live forever. So far, so good!
Yeah I was planning to
Yeah I was planning to convert all of the files in Audacity and mess with them seeing as the music doesn't loop and i need some background noise.
Oh and I've been sending the link to scav3ng3r out to random people. Trying to get some activity on here.
Very appreciated
I too have been posting the link in the two other places I frequent, the Seasteading Institute, and this crazy /x/ town called New Eden.
My real plan to get things moving though, involves finishing The Gibson House and posting that on Digg! I'll need your help when the time comes, I just need to wrap up some stuff first :)
Btw, whenever you move your game from Work In Progress to Finished, I'll frontpage it :)
I plan to live forever. So far, so good!
My friend and I are actually
My friend and I are actually into urban exploration. With the weather finally improving in Canuckistan, our expeditions will probably become more frequent. Might find some material for a game of my own, or some locations to share. :)
I see you did your revision!A
I see you did your revision!
A couple of problems that encountered:
1.) The silver coin dissapears when you go downstairs. This occured before your revision, and still does.
2.) The text for the hallway with the Cthulhu-like gunk is gone. Where'd the dialogue go? I can only assume that this has to do with the revision.
Aaaaaand that's it I think.
Fantastic game, mate.
I'm in your mind, creeping all around...
