How the virtual Dungeon Master decides success and failure

Two machines power dramatic uncertainty in FableForge. The Fate Jackpot rolls customizable stats when you create a character. The Bullseye tests a stat against task difficulty — low can win, high can lose. Try them separately, or run the full pipeline: roll a stat, then fire it at the target.

★ Full pipeline ★

1) Pull the Fate Jackpot to roll stats. 2) Pick which stat to test. 3) Set difficulty & fire Bullseye. Same flow the Narrator uses when the story gets risky.

Waiting for a Jackpot roll…

Tip: after a roll, every stat is available below too — you can re-test without re-rolling.

★ Fate Jackpot ★

Name your five stats (any game can define its own), then drag the PULL! knob down the rail and release. Weak pull = quicker drama; full pull = longer spin. Reels settle 0–100.

★ Bullseye check ★

Higher difficulty → smaller bullseye. Higher stat → more pellets. Every pellet still flies after a hit so the beat stays dramatic. Pick a stat by name (same five as the Jackpot), or fire from the pipeline after a roll.

Ready.

Under the hood (friendly)

The engine compares your stat to the task’s difficulty with real variance — not a pure coin flip and not a pure “highest number always wins.” Approximate chance of at least one visual bullseye hit updates as you drag the sliders.

~?% chance (adjust sliders)

Take it back to the story

In a full game, the Narrator chooses when a check is needed, which stat applies, and how hard the task is. You only feel the tension — and the comic continues either way.
